Stroke Prevention and Treatment
Intra-arterial Thrombolysis: An advanced treatment only offered by hospitals that have interventional radiologists trained in the procedure, thrombolytic drugs are given to stroke patients that have formed an acute blood clot in the brain to dissolve the clot and limit the extent of the damage.
Merci: A flexible tapered wire is used to retrieve clots in cerebral blood vessels. This device restores blood flow to the affected area of the brain and extends the treatment window for stroke.
Intracranial angioplasty: Stents are used in patients with recurring strokes to provide structural support for intracranial vessels with accumulation of fatty deposits. This results in a decreased risk of future stroke.
Carotid Stenting: Since carotid stenosis is a major cause of stroke, a stent is delivered into the carotid artery to open the narrowing of the carotid artery. This procedure is less invasive than a carotid endarterectomy, surgical removal of the plaque in theartery.
Intracranial Aneurysm Coiling: A soft, platinum coil is threaded through a catheter into the aneurysm of the cerebral vessel (wall of an artery in the brain weakens and “balloons” outward). The coil is released, filling the aneurysm and sealing it off from the rest of the blood vessel, preventing a brain aneurysm rupture which can cause hemorrhagic stroke and death.
