St. Mary’s Medical Center to present West Virginia Senior Sports Classic

(HUNTINGTON)—St. Mary’s Medical Center will present the 20th Annual West Virginia Senior Sports Classic June 20-22 throughout the Huntington area.

The Classic is a statewide competition which allows men and women 50 and older to compete in 11 age categories in 18 different sports: golf, tennis, bowling, badminton, table tennis, shuffleboard, pickleball, racquetball, horseshoes, swimming, track and field, archery, 5K race, 5K race walk, 10K cycling, basketball, volleyball and softball.

The WVSSC is sanctioned by the National Senior Games Association, but 2013 is a non-qualifying year for the national games. The West Virginia senior games are open, meaning competitors do not have to live in West Virginia to participate.

The games will officially kick off Thursday, June 20 at 5 p.m. with the Opening Ceremonies at the St. Mary’s Conference Center, 2825 Fifth Avenue. The ceremonies will be preceded by a torch relay beginning at 4 p.m. at Pullman Square. Running with the torch will be Former Marshall University Head Football Coach Bob Pruett and other area dignitaries.

Another highlight of the weekend will be the Celebration of Athletes Dinner June 21 at 6 p.m. at the Pullman Plaza Hotel. Pruett will be the guest speaker.
