Cardiac Catheterization

In 1979, specialists in St. Mary’s cardiac catheterization lab were the first in the Tri-State to perform cardiac catheterizations.

Since then, the lab has performed tens of thousands of the procedures to detect coronary artery disease, a condition in which the inside of blood vessels become clogged with plaque, blocking blood flow. In the cath lab, patients also may undergo other procedures, such as angioplasty, rotoblator, peripheral vascular diagnosis and treatment, patent foramin ovale/atrial septal defect closures, electrophysiology studies, ablations and pacemaker insertions. Cardiologists also may implant a drug-eluting stent that slowly releases a medication to help prevent the overgrowth of normal tissue and keep the artery open.
