Meet Our Educators

Are You New To Diabetes?

If you have just been told that you have diabetes, you are likely experiencing a variety of emotions. Common questions include:

  • Do I have to give up my favorite foods?
  • Is there anything I can do to keep from losing my eyesight?
  • What does this shaky, sweaty feeling mean?
  • How do I choose a blood sugar monitor?

The certified diabetes educators at St. Mary's can answer these questions, and teach lifestyle changes to manage your diabetes day-to-day and prevent long-term complications.

There are several ways to begin diabetes education. One education option begins with small amounts of information offered through a nutrition class or monitoring class. What Can I Eat and Easy Steps to Monitoring are designed to start education without overwhelming participants. From this foundation, patients may desire to proceed to the Steps to Success program.

For those patients who are interested in learning as much as possible, as quickly as possible, we recommend Steps to Success. In this program, patients look at all aspects of diabetes management, including nutrition and exercise issues, blood sugar monitoring, medications, and avoiding long-term complications such as eye disease, kidney disease, heart disease and foot problems.

Are You "Burned Out" Trying to Manage Your Diabetes?

Some patients who have attempted to manage their diabetes on their own have experienced "burn out", which is the feeling of wanting to give up because it is too difficult to continue. Others have actually given up but now have a desire to take care of themselves again.

At St. Mary's, our goal is to partner with patients to help find management strategies that work for their respective lifestyles. Some patients:

  • need a re-working of their meal plan
  • are worried about their feet, and want to learn to take care of them properly
  • have been checking their blood sugar for years and could benefit from experience with new monitors
  • are motivated by a complete review
  • and update of diabetes management
