About St. Mary's Medical Center
St. Mary's Medical Center (SMMC), a member of Marshall Health Network, is a 400-bed medical facility in Huntington, WV. SMMC serves as a regional cancer center, regional neuroscience center, Level II trauma center, and has Center of Excellence status in Antimicrobial Stewardship and as a Regional Heart Institute. Marshall Health Network Pharmacy's vision is to deliver comprehensive and integrated pharmacy services to our patients resulting in the best pharmaceutical outcomes and experiences.
Purpose Statement
Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1) pharmacy residency programs build upon residents’ Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Program Overview
The PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program at St. Mary’s Medical Center offers customized training in the provision of direct patient care, leadership, and pharmacy innovation. Residents at SMMC will be an integrated member of the healthcare team and will be able to perform practice-related research. Residents will complete 6 required rotations and 4 elective rotations. Rotation schedules are flexible and enable the resident to gain understanding in core areas while promoting the pursuit of individual interests. At completion of our program, the resident will be able to:
- Describe their personal philosophy of pharmaceutical care
- Understand the process of medication use review and drug policy development that ensures rational, cost-effective therapy
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with other team members
- Deliver high level pharmacy education
- Understand how to develop and implement quality improvement initiatives
- Complete practice-related research
- Function as a clinical pharmacy generalist
