Nearly 190 students from across the region gathered at the St. Mary's Conference Center on June 9 for orientation after being selected through a competitive application process to participate in Marshall Health Network's VolunTeen Program.
The summer volunteer program introduces students ages 14 to 18 to careers in healthcare while providing opportunities to serve patients, visitors and staff throughout the health system.
"Each year, we're encouraged by the number of students who apply for the program and their interest in exploring health care careers," said Julie Neal, director of volunteer services for Marshall Health Network. "By the end of the summer, many have discovered dozens of careers that play an important role in caring for patients and supporting our community."
Throughout the summer, volunteers will serve in a variety of departments across Marshall Health Network facilities, assisting staff while gaining firsthand insight into the many roles that contribute to patient care and the patient experience.
Participants also develop workplace skills, including communication, teamwork, responsibility and dependability, while learning how hospitals and health care facilities operate.
Marshall Health Network's Volunteer Services team coordinates the program each year, helping students build confidence, explore career opportunities and gain experience in a professional setting.
The 2026 VolunTeen Program runs June 15 through Aug. 9.
